downham wall

When Downham was first developed 100 years ago a wall was built to keep those that had moved from Deptford and Bermondsey out of the ‘posher’ areas to the south. This ‘class wall’ was in place for 26 years.

When we’ve spoken to Downham residents about this they have been amazed to hear about the wall and want to find out more, and have asked for us to create a community show in the local area.

We’ve been working with local groups, schools and residents to explore the findings from all our work so far before staging a full production later in the year as part of the Downham Centenary celebrations.

In October 2026 we’ll be staging a play inspired by what the residents of Downham have told us.
